Originally from the Twin Cities, K. Mercedes found her way into acting by idolizing sci-fi and action movies from a young age. Seeing strong female characters, especially women of color, in Star Trek and other sci-fi movies inspired her pursue acting professionally. As the daughter of a mixed race couple in Minnesota, growing up she often felt “other.” Watching movies and pretending she was in them was her way of finding her voice in the world.
K. began taking acting lessons as soon as she could read, and quickly began working in many musical theater and Shakespeare productions in Minneapolis and New York. In addition to Minneapolis based acting schools, she also trained at Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Center, where the intense training helped her come into her own as a performer. After graduating high school, K. moved to Los Angeles to attend California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) for four years, where she was classically trained in their conservatory BFA program.
Passionate about science-fiction, and all things “nerd,” K. can answer any comic-book trivia thrown her way, and loves to discuss classic sci-fi films and concepts. She's also a dedicated roller-skater, after many years competing in the U.S. Figure Skating League.
K. Mercedes is a member of SAG-AFTRA & LA based.
